Valentine’s-inspired Boxes with Lids made by 2nd grade students

Length: 

Day 1--60 minutes to make box

Day 2--60 minutes to glaze box

Goals: Students will learn basic slab building techniques. They will follow a template in order to create a piece of functional pottery with a lid. This is a great project for students to experience transforming a 2-dimensional shape into a 3-dimensional object!

Project Variation/Modification Ideas: This project is highly adaptable! Boxes can be square, circular, triangular, hexagonal! And the surface decoration can be an opportunity for students to explore your classroom’s curriculum through a visual lens.

Students can make boxes that

  • explore color, shape, and/or texture

  • parallel, enhance, and diversify teachers' curriculum in science, history, math, art, literature through representational glazing

  • celebrate cultural holidays

  • express unique students’ unique and important identities!
